Since 1956 we’ve had it in our fingers
Three generations of craftsmanship
For generations, knowledge of fabric, finishing and confection has been passed down within Van der Lelie.
That foundation can be seen in everything we make.
From everyday tailor made work to specialist solutions.
What once started by hand is now supported by machines and systems, with the same eye for detail.
Take a step back in time with us and see how craftsmanship has shaped Van der Lelie into what it is today.
The first stitch
In 1956, Van der Lelie begins in a small atelier in Leiden.
With an eye for detail and a feel for material, one craftswoman, the mother of Herman van der Lelie, lays the foundation for what would later become a family business.
What started then with needle, thread and fabric still forms the core of how we work today.
Forward
From Leiden, Van der Lelie continues to grow.
A second location is added, and later the ateliers are brought together.
After a challenging period, a new beginning follows in Leiderdorp.
There, the foundation is laid for the company as it stands today.
Romania
In the early 2000s, Van der Lelie expands to Romania.
What starts with a small team grows into a fully established atelier where craftsmanship and precision are central.
Today, hundreds of people work here towards the same goal: creating interior textiles that are right down to the smallest detail.
The collaboration between the Netherlands and Romania forms the core of our production.
New generation
With the arrival of a new generation, Van der Lelie gains new energy.
The foundation remains the same: craftsmanship and quality.
At the same time, technology, data and process optimisation play an increasingly important role.
This is how we continue building on what is already there.
Moving forward together
The new phase continues to take shape.
Chrissie, who has been part of Van der Lelie for many years, moves forward in this phase together with Sjoerd.
Together, they build on what is already there.
They strengthen each other in craftsmanship, process and development.
This is how the atelier continues to grow, step by step.
A NEW PHASE
After nearly seventy years of craftsmanship, Van der Lelie enters a new phase.
With a renewed identity, we show what we stand for today:
a modern atelier where craftsmanship and innovation come together.
